Aram Batholl ศิลปินร่วมสมัยกับการใช้ Digital Art เป็นเครื่องมือสื่อความคิดสุดล้ำ

อราม บาร์ธอลล์ (Aram Bartholl) เป็นศิลปินร่วมสมัยชาวเยอรมัน ผู้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะเชิงความคิด (Conceptual Art) ได้อย่างโดดเด่นที่สุดคนหนึ่ง โดยเขามักสะท้อนเรื่องความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างโลกดิจิทัลและโลกแห่งความเป็นจริงได้น่าสนใจ นอกจากนี้ยังมักนำเสนอประเด็นเกี่ยวกับความไม่มีตัวตน ความเป็นส่วนตัวในโลกอินเตอร์เน็ต รวมถึงวัฒนธรรมของการสื่อสารในโลกยุคดิจิทัลที่มีผลต่อวิถีชีวิตของผู้คนในปัจจุบันด้วย

บาร์ธอลล์ เกิดเมื่อวันที่  27 ธันวาคม  ค.ศ. 1972 ณ กรุงเบรเมน (Bremen) ประเทศเยอรมนี จบการศึกษาด้านวิศวกรรมโยธาจากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปะเบอร์ลิน (Berlin University of the Arts) ระหว่างที่เรียนเขาก็ได้ไปฝึกงานในบริษัทสถาปนิก MVRDV ในเมืองรอตเทอร์ดาม (Rotterdam) ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์เป็นเวลา 9 เดือน หลังจากนั้นเขาก็ได้เข้าไปเป็นหนึ่งในสมาชิกของกลุ่มศิลปิน Freies Fach ที่มุ่งนำเสนอผลงานที่สะท้อนประเด็นเกี่ยวกับสังคมเมืองและงานศิลปะในพื้นที่สาธารณะ นอกจากนี้เขายังเป็นสมาชิกของกลุ่ม Free Art and Technology Lab (F.A.T) ที่เป็นการรวมตัวกันของกลุ่มคนหลากหลายสาขาอาชีพ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ศิลปิน วิศวกร นักวิทยาศาสตร์ นักกฎหมาย นักดนตรี ฯลฯ เพื่อนำเสนอผลงานที่เกิดจากการหลอมรวมวัฒนธรรมป๊อปให้เข้ากับเทคโนโลยีซอฟแวร์ Open Source ที่สาธารณชนสามารถเข้าถึงได้อย่างอิสระเสรี รวมถึงวิพากษ์วิจารณ์กฏหมายลิขสิทธิ์ในเรื่องของศิลปะสื่อใหม่ (New Media Art)  และเทคโนโลยี

บาร์ธอลล์มักนำเสนอผลงานศิลปะที่ใช้สื่อดิจิทัลสะท้อนความคิดและเป็นผลงานศิลปะบนพื้นที่สาธารณะที่เชื่อมโยงระหว่างโลกแห่งความเป็นจริงและโลกเสมือนจริง ผลงานที่สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับเขามากที่สุด คือโปรเจคศิลปะ Dead Drops (ปี 2010) ซึ่งเขาได้นำแท่ง USB ไปติดบนผนังตามพื้นที่สาธารณะ 5 แห่งในนิวยอร์ก เพื่อสร้างเครือข่ายการแชร์ไฟล์ข้อมูลอย่างเสรี โดยทุกคนสามารถนำคอมพิวเตอร์มาเสียบเพื่อดาวน์โหลดไฟล์กลับไปได้ตามที่ต้องการ ซึ่งปัจจุบันโปรเจคนี้ยังคงดำเนินอยู่และขยายตัวไปในกว่าสิบประเทศทั่วโลก และเพิ่มจำนวนแท่ง USB เป็นจำนวนมากถึง 1,400 ชิ้น

นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีผลงานศิลปะจัดวางที่ชื่อ DVD Dead Drop (ปี2012) ซึ่งเขาได้นำเครื่องไรท์แผ่นดีวีดีไปซ่อนไว้ในผนังด้านนอกของพิพิธภัณฑ์ Museum of the Moving Image ในนิวยอร์ก เพื่อให้ผู้คนนำแผ่นดีวีดีเปล่ามาไรท์ข้อมูลต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับนิทรรศการศิลปะและผลงานศิลปะกลับไปแบบฟรี ๆ ได้ตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง

โดยทั้งโปรเจค Dead Drops และ DVD Dead Drop เป็นการแสดงความคิดเกี่ยวกับเทคโนโลยีที่พัฒนาขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ซึ่งขัดกับกฎหมายลิขสิทธิ์ที่กดดันให้มีการจำกัดเสรีภาพในการแสดงออกให้น้อยลง อนาคตอาจทำให้เราไม่สามารถส่งภาพหรือข้อมูลให้แก่กันได้ การแบ่งปันข้อมูลความรู้อย่างอิสระเสรีซึ่งเขาเห็นว่าเป็นประโยชน์กับผู้คนมาก ๆ ก็จะหายไป

ครั้งหนึ่งบาร์ธอลล์ยังเคยมาจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะที่เมืองไทยด้วย โดยเขาเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินที่ร่วมแสดง ผลงานในเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยไทยแลนด์ เบียนนาเล่ กระบี่ (Thailand Biennale Krabi 2018) กับผลงานที่มีชื่อว่า Perfect Beach HD (ปี2018) เป็นผลงานศิลปะแสดงสด (Performance Art) บนชายหาดไร่เลย์ ซึ่งเขาได้ให้นักแสดงยกฉากไวนิล 3 ฉากพิมพ์รูปชายหาดเขตร้อน ที่เปรียบเหมือนสวรรค์ของนักท่องเที่ยวทั่วโลก มีหาดทรายขาวตัดกับสีฟ้าสดของน้ำทะเลและท้องฟ้าสีคราม ที่เรามักจะเห็นบ่อย ๆ บนวอลล์เปเปอร์ที่ปรากฎบนหน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์ โดยนำฉากทั้งหมดไปตั้งให้นักท่องเที่ยวชมและเปลี่ยนรูปเคลื่อนฉากไปเรื่อย ๆ ให้คนเข้ามาโพสต์ท่าถ่ายรูป  เปรียบเทียบระหว่างหาดจริงที่อยู่ตรงหน้าและหาดดิจิทัลที่ศิลปินนำภาพจากอินเทอร์เน็ตมาตกแต่ง ดัดแปลงเพิ่มเติม เพื่อกระตุ้นความรู้สึกและปฏิกิริยาของผู้คนต่อป้ายนั้น ซึ่งศิลปินต้องการสะท้อนความคิดเกี่ยวกับการใช้โซเชียลมีเดียในปัจจุบันที่บังคับให้เราเสพธรรมชาติในการท่องเที่ยวอย่างล้นเกินไป จนกลายเป็นเรื่องของตัวคนกับฉากหลังต่าง ๆ และตั้งคำถามว่าอะไรคือความจริงที่เราอยู่กันแน่

Aram Batholl – contemporary artist and digital art as groundbreaking presentation tool

Aram Batholl is a German contemporary artist and one of the most prominent conceptual artists. He usually has an interesting way of reflecting the relations between the digital world and the real world. Also, he usually presents the point about the lack of self and privacy on the internet and digital-age communication culture that has affected people nowadays.

Batholl was born on 27 December 1972 in Bremen, Germany. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Berlin University of the Arts. During his study, he got an internship with MVRDV in Rotterdam, Netherlands for nine months. Later, he became a member of Freies Fach, a group of artists who focused on presenting art pieces that reflect issues regarding urban society and art in public space. Additionally, he was a member of the Free Art and Technology Lab (F.A.T), which was a group formed by people from different professions, including artists, engineers, scientists, lawyers, musicians, etc. F.A.T presented their works that were born out of the merging of pop culture and open source software technology freely accessible to the public and criticized new media art and technology copyright law.

Batholl usually presents art pieces made of conceptual digital media. They are art in public space that link between the real world and virtual reality. He became best known for the art project called Dead Drops (2010), where he attached USB sticks on the walls of five public spaces in New York to create a free data sharing network. Anyone could plug their computer in and download all the files they wanted. The project is still ongoing and has expanded into over 10 countries around the world, with the number of USB sticks rising to 1,400.

He is also known for an installation art called DVD Dead Drop (2012) where he hid a DVD writer in the outer wall of the Museum of the Moving Image in New York, allowing people to bring empty DVDs and freely burn the information about art exhibitions and art pieces to their DVDs 24/7.

Both Dead Drops and DVD Dead Drop were how he expressed his opinion about how technology is becoming more and more advanced, yet the copyright law keeps diminishing the freedom of expression to the point that we might not be able to send each other pictures or data in the future. And the practice of free data sharing, which he thinks is very useful to people, will come to an end.

Batholl once exhibited his art work in Thailand. He was one of the artists who shared their art projects in Thailand Biennale Krabi 2018. His project, the Perfect Beach HD (2018), was a performance art on Railay Beach. He instructed an actor to set three vinyl cutouts with the pictures of tropical beaches with white sand and blue sea and sky we usually see as desktop wallpaper—a symbol of paradise for tourists around the world—on the actual beach for tourists to see. He switched and moved the cutouts around, allowing people to take photos and compare between the real beach and the digital beaches made of internet pictures altered by the artist. The project was meant to arouse people’s feelings and reactions toward the cutouts as the artist wanted to question the reality and convey how social media these days forces us to overdose on nature tourism that things have become too much about people and settings.
